A contractor breakdown of Schluter Kerdi, Wedi, and Mapei for shower waterproofing: cost, durability, install time, and which to use when.
The short version
For most shower remodels, Schluter Kerdi-Board is the right choice, it's the system most New England tile setters know best, components are readily available at any tile shop, and a properly-installed Kerdi system will last 25+ years. Wedi Building Panels are slightly better for a curbless or steam-shower install where structure and waterproofing happen at the same time. Mapei Mapelastic is the best fit when you want to keep the existing concrete or cement-board substrate and just add a waterproofing layer on top.
We install all three. Here's how we choose.
Schluter Kerdi, the default for most jobs
What it is: A polyethylene membrane bonded to the substrate (cement board or Kerdi-Board) with thinset, then tiled directly over the membrane.
Strengths:
- Components stocked at every tile shop in New England
- Crack-isolation built in
- Excellent vapor management, fights mold even in poorly ventilated bathrooms
- Most installers in MA know Kerdi well; finding a future contractor for repairs is easy
Weaknesses:
- Higher labor cost vs sheet membranes, every seam needs proper banding and corner pieces
- Kerdi-Board is more expensive per sqft than cement board
Best for: A standard tub-to-shower conversion or full bath gut, with curb. Mid-range to high-end projects. About 70% of our shower work uses Schluter.
Wedi, the right call for curbless and steam
What it is: Closed-cell foam core with cement-coated, fiberglass-reinforced facing. The panel itself is the waterproofing, no membrane needed.
Strengths:
- Faster install (no separate waterproofing step)
- Lighter than cement board, easier on framing
- Fully waterproof through the panel, not just on its face. Exceptional for curbless showers and steam.
- Pre-formed shower bases (Wedi Fundo Riolito), perfectly sloped, no mud-bed work
Weaknesses:
- More expensive material
- Fewer installers know it locally. Schluter has won the brand-recognition war in MA
Best for: Curbless / barrier-free showers. Steam showers. Primary bath suites where you want to spec the highest-grade build. About 20% of our shower work uses Wedi.
Mapei Mapelastic / Aqua Defense, when keeping the substrate
What it is: A liquid-applied waterproofing membrane painted onto cement board or existing substrate. Cures into a flexible, fully waterproof skin.
Strengths:
- Lowest material cost
- Best for renovations where you're keeping the existing substrate but the old waterproofing has failed
- Perfect for irregular or already-tiled surfaces (some Mapei products tile-over)
Weaknesses:
- Application thickness matters a lot, too thin and it fails
- Needs proper cure time (24–48 hr) before tile, which slows the schedule
- Less forgiving in framing-flex situations
Best for: Budget-conscious refreshes, when the underlying structure is sound. Older homes where you want to preserve the existing wall plane. About 10% of our shower work uses Mapei.
Cost comparison (typical labor + materials, 60 sqft shower)
| System | Materials | Labor | Total | |---|---|---|---| | Schluter Kerdi (full system + Kerdi-Board) | $750–$950 | $1,800–$2,400 | $2,550–$3,350 | | Wedi (panels + corners + base) | $1,100–$1,400 | $1,400–$1,800 | $2,500–$3,200 | | Mapei Mapelastic (over cement board) | $200–$350 | $1,500–$2,000 | $1,700–$2,350 |
Wedi often comes out similar in total cost to Schluter despite higher material because the install is faster.
What we'd never do
- Greenboard or moisture-resistant drywall in a wet shower. It's not a waterproofing layer.
- Skip the seams. Every system has specific seam treatment. Kerdi-Band, Wedi joint sealant, Mapei AquaDefense over corners. Skip it and you'll be re-doing the shower in 3 years.
- Tile over a failing membrane. If we open up a wall and find a previous installer's bad waterproofing, we tear it back to studs. No exceptions.
What we'd quote you
A standard bath gut with Schluter Kerdi runs $22K–$32K in our service area. A primary bath with Wedi curbless and custom tile runs $32K–$48K. Tell us about the project and Glenn will walk it within a week.
